This lava stone elephant statue in Catania, Sicily has been the official symbol of the city since 1239 and is positively lovable. Today it graces the Fountain of the Elephant or Fontana dell’Elefante on the city’s central square, Piazza del Duomo, carries an Egyptian obelisk on his back, and according to local legend, protects Catania with his magical powers.
