Description
Piraeus Lion - Ancient Greek Statue Guarding the Venetian Arsenal
The Piraeus Lion, Leone del Pireo, was originally in Piraeus, the harbour of Athens, Greece. This is the big boy of the lions at Porta Magna, the Great Gate of Arsenale di Venezia, a majestic sculpture 3 meters (9 feet) tall. It is very old, sculpted in the 4th century BC, and was the landmark of the port Piraeus until the Venetians looted it in 1687.
